Summary

After some time in a long distance sort-of-relationship with his crush, Shouji is crestfallen when weeks of getting ghosted finally result in a confession: his boyfriend just isn't gay。 Having struggled with his sexuality for years, Shouji throws himself into his work to distract himself from the rejection— but when a young homeless man called Hama shows up at the shop, Shouji finds himself curious to learn more about him and, hopefully, befriend him。 Attempting to make their way in a society that labels each of them as 'outcasts' and 'dirty,' the two men grow closer。 Together, they begin to find they have more in common than either of them could have anticipated。

Super cute!!!🦋

An arc was provided in exchange for an honest review… however, me being me, it’s late。 😅This story is honestly so sweet。 Our main protagonists is in a relationship that’s going nowhere and soon to end; while attending his father’s store — and the old man’s next door — he meets “Hama,” a man who became houseless。 They bond and are there for each other until they fall in love。 (Or maybe it isn’t love but I need there to be hope so we’re calling it love!) happy ending。 what else do you need?

I loved this story。 It was very straightforward, but sweet, and sometimes you just need that。 A little bit of angst, a little bit of fluff, and some nice character development。 I'll be reading the second one。 :) I loved this story。 It was very straightforward, but sweet, and sometimes you just need that。 A little bit of angst, a little bit of fluff, and some nice character development。 I'll be reading the second one。 :) 。。。more

Although the ending was rushed, it’s nice for a change that this Yaoi story is about a homeless man and a liquor shopkeeper, both were cute :)

Something different and refreshing。

As a somewhat seasoned yaoi reader, I put picking this volume up for the longest time just because of the cover and weird title。 For that, I am deeply ashamed because it is one of the most wholesome and heartfelt yaoi I have read in a long time。 It just felt so real?! Shouji's self-consciousness and hatred felt so genuine and believable。 I loved how Shouji didn't care what others thought of him and managed to be quite upfront with his feelings。 He just felt so real as a character and definitely As a somewhat seasoned yaoi reader, I put picking this volume up for the longest time just because of the cover and weird title。 For that, I am deeply ashamed because it is one of the most wholesome and heartfelt yaoi I have read in a long time。 It just felt so real?! A humorous story full of teachings about judging a book by its cover and looking beyond appearances。 The development was great, with characters neither so complex nor so flat, and with scenes that keep you addicted to the story。 You can't stop reading until you finish。 I feel like it could have been a bit longer, but it's a manga very easy manga。 。。。more

Don't Call Me Daddy is a sequel to this book, but I'm glad I accidentally read them in the wrong order, because。。。this book really doesn't align with the other volume, in some odd ways。 For one, there's no sense that Mita and Hanao hadn't spoken to each other for twenty years。 In fact, Shouji, who was six years old when Hanao left, greets this 54 year old man like he's not surprised at all to see him again - even though he looked pretty different at age 34, when Shouji was still young enough to Don't Call Me Daddy is a sequel to this book, but I'm glad I accidentally read them in the wrong order, because。。。this book really doesn't align with the other volume, in some odd ways。 For one, there's no sense that Mita and Hanao hadn't spoken to each other for twenty years。 In fact, Shouji, who was six years old when Hanao left, greets this 54 year old man like he's not surprised at all to see him again - even though he looked pretty different at age 34, when Shouji was still young enough to forget a lot of details。 I doubt he would've even recognized him, and certainly would've had a lot more questions about his sudden return。Then there's the fact that everyone in this book is so open and accepting of Shouji's sexuality, including the elementary school kids who come to the snack shop。 It's just an entirely different environment than the one portrayed in the Mita/Hanao book, where cultural homophobia plays a HUGE role in why Mita chose to leave, and to spend literal decades away from the people he loved most。The message in this book is a nice one, and I like the parallel between Shouji seeing himself as "dirty" because of his desires for a man who rejected him as "gross," and slowly realizing that the kind, thoughtful homeless man who comes by the store is just as human as anyone else - and someone Shouji is growing to value。Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of actual relationship development between the two of them。 Shouji is hung up on another guy for most of the book, then rebounds into sobbing to Hama about it, then switches his affections over to Hama。 It feels like more of a rebound than anything, and I wish we'd seen more of them actually getting to know each other, and Hama revealing more of his past。 He doesn't even tell Shouji his real name until after they've started dating, as far as I can tell。 Some of the narrative is a little muddied, and there are a few pages that almost feel like they're out of chronological order, which is weird, because the second book is so beautifully, perfectly constructed。 This seems like a decent first pass that paved the way for a wonderful second book。 I'm just sad it's not as amazing as the older generation's story, because this author clearly has a ton of potential。 。。。more

Whoa, I love the theme of this manga! Being yourself and be who you are as main theme is totally touched theme for me *ugly sobbing* Hama, a homeless guy and shouji, the gay man who tried hard to forget the hard past for him and then fallin' in love with the homeless—handsome—guy after that。 Some event is so。。。 Something。 Like, after his pure and honest, Hama knew something : shouji is honest and not dirtyWHAT THE FUCK I'M JUST TRYING NOT TO CRIED BUT THIS IS SO SO。。。 DAMN😭😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️❤️ Whoa, I love the theme of this manga! A captivating story, very strong page designs, and a gritty strain of realism make this manga a page turner。 Shouji is a young gay man who, while having the casual if not nurturing support of those around him, remains insecure emotionally。 He hasn't freed himself of inner homophobic attitudes, and accepts psychological abuse from his boyfriend out of neediness。 The flip side is that Shouji can see the good in people, including the giant homeless man, Hama, who is unkempt and in need of a bath。 A captivating story, very strong page designs, and a gritty strain of realism make this manga a page turner。 Shouji is a young gay man who, while having the casual if not nurturing support of those around him, remains insecure emotionally。 He hasn't freed himself of inner homophobic attitudes, and accepts psychological abuse from his boyfriend out of neediness。 The flip side is that Shouji can see the good in people, including the giant homeless man, Hama, who is unkempt and in need of a bath。Daily life serves to weave the lives of these two men closer together, abetted by a Greek chorus of neighborhood children offering pointed and often funny running commentary。 I found myself wanting to know where these two were going to end up, and the artwork adds to the experience。 The visual pacing, characterization, and flow are well done and delightful - strong enough to overcome the artist’s quirks, like drawing the hands unusually small。Still, at one point - perhaps due to translation? - the work’s clearly generous intent starts to be undermined due to some poor metaphorical choices。 While it’s meant to reaffirm the humanity of the homeless, it undermines their dignity by referring to them as dirty, broken, and cheap。 Again, this might me more due to the translation than anything else。 Still, it mars an otherwise engaging BL。 。。。more

This was a very sweet manga with some interesting commentary on how being “dirty” doesn’t say anything about how “clean” you are inside。 I really liked the slow burn of Hama and Shouji’s relationship。 You would think that Hama, who is homeless would be the one to say “Don’t call me dirty” but surprisingly it was actually Shouji。 I thought it was really interesting how Shouji felt like being gay was dirty and related to Hama in that way。 I also really liked that everyone in Shouji’s life knew tha This was a very sweet manga with some interesting commentary on how being “dirty” doesn’t say anything about how “clean” you are inside。 I really liked the slow burn of Hama and Shouji’s relationship。 You would think that Hama, who is homeless would be the one to say “Don’t call me dirty” but surprisingly it was actually Shouji。 I thought it was really interesting how Shouji felt like being gay was dirty and related to Hama in that way。 I also really liked that everyone in Shouji’s life knew that he was gay and supported him, even the little kids in town。 Coming out stories are great, but it’s also nice to read a story where that’s already happened and the main character is comfortable with themselves。 Side note: This vaguely reminded me of A Note in the Margin, probably because both of them centre on a relationship between two men in which one is homeless。 They're not super similar in terms of the story, but would recommend if anyone wants to read a similar dynamic。 。。。more

I enjoyed the art style and the pacing of this little manga。 It was interesting to see the characters move through their arcs, and the ending was satisfying。 I liked the message - that despite being labelled 'dirty' in different ways, the main pair was able to move past these labels, and overcome (or at least, begin the journey to overcoming) the prejudice they each faced。 There was a very realistic and charming undertone to this story that I quite liked, and I think many others would like, too。 I enjoyed the art style and the pacing of this little manga。 It was interesting to see the characters move through their arcs, and the ending was satisfying。 I liked the message - that despite being labelled 'dirty' in different ways, the main pair was able to move past these labels, and overcome (or at least, begin the journey to overcoming) the prejudice they each faced。 There was a very realistic and charming undertone to this story that I quite liked, and I think many others would like, too。Overall, an enjoyable story! 。。。more

It seems like there's a lot。of internalized homophobia here。 I can't put my finger on it but the whole book seemed really to equate being homeless with being gay and neither topic was tackled very well。 It seems like there's a lot。of internalized homophobia here。 I can't put my finger on it but the whole book seemed really to equate being homeless with being gay and neither topic was tackled very well。 。。。more

The romance in this didn't seem real to me at all。 It was more like two people working through their issues and helping each other then at the last minute it's like "Hey I like you!" That would have been ok if Hama said yes but he rejected Shouji and then just randomly changed his mind and they get together。 What???The saving grace for this is all the interesting side characters, family dynamics, and views on being homosexual or homeless in small town Japan。 The art is also nicely detailed。 It's The romance in this didn't seem real to me at all。 It was more like two people working through their issues and helping each other then at the last minute it's like "Hey I like you!" 2 stars is being generous。 It has a nice idea about acceptance of self and others, but it was boring: Predictable, full of unnecessary tangents, and reads as though it was just a prompt by which to create a story, rather than something the mangaka actually cared about。 I honestly expected as much, sadly, and only read this because I wanted to read the spin-off about the dad(s) and I’m a completionist for this sort of thing。

More of a 3。5 for me。 This was fine。 It wasn't anything stellar。 Despite the length, it felt a lot longer than what it was。 Plenty of detail and build-up。The love interest is unconventional。 There was a nice message behind the story, though I'm not sure if it was the perfect way to go about it。 More of a 3。5 for me。 This was fine。 It wasn't anything stellar。 Despite the length, it felt a lot longer than what it was。 Plenty of detail and build-up。The love interest is unconventional。 There was a nice message behind the story, though I'm not sure if it was the perfect way to go about it。 。。。more

(4 Stars)Though I did enjoy this story I was a little underwhelmed by it。 I’m not quite sure as to what I was expecting but I just felt there was potential to delve more into the societal aspects of the story & the way in which people are viewed, and also the struggles of coming to terms with sexuality and relationships。I liked the mixed of characters we got to meet and thought the interactions between them were interesting。The art style was good and the expressions were drawn quite nicely。

Shouji is a young man who works at his father's liquor while also helping out at the snack shop across the street from his dad's business。 One night, a homeless man purchases a cup of noodles from the shop and from there Shouji grows and overcomes his own prejudices。 Don't get me wrong, this is a love story, but it's a lot more than that。 The big theme of the story is compassion and seeing the humanity in everyone。 This story has some wonderful and truly heartbreaking moments。 One of my favorite Shouji is a young man who works at his father's liquor while also helping out at the snack shop across the street from his dad's business。 One night, a homeless man purchases a cup of noodles from the shop and from there Shouji grows and overcomes his own prejudices。 Don't get me wrong, this is a love story, but it's a lot more than that。 The big theme of the story is compassion and seeing the humanity in everyone。 This story has some wonderful and truly heartbreaking moments。 One of my favorites moments is the one that really brings Shouji and Hama together for the first time; when the police assume because Hama is homeless, he must be a thief。 It's such a simple moment, but it shows just how cruel people can be without realizing。 After all, those policemen didn't think they were doing anything wrong and thought they were completely justified in their assumption, until someone came along and challenged their opinions。 There a number of moments like that--people making assumptions and being unwittingly or uncaringly cruel。 These moments are balanced by Shouji and Hama's compassion for each other。 These two characters both see each other and understand each other in a way that is beautiful and heart-warming。 Are there flaws? Yes。 Do those flaws outweigh the overall message? Personally, I don't think so。 。。。more

So good! I made me tear up a bit。 It surprised me with the realistic and serious topics of acceptance and the homelessness stigma in Japan

3/5⭐️。The story was kinda meh。 But the art style was lovely。It was cute/funny at times and I liked the characters。But the pacing felt somewhat off and there was probably some kind of message there but it didn’t came to it rights because the story was kinda rushed at times。。I really want to read the other manga volume that depicts the story between the MC’s dad and his friend though。

I honestly didn't know what to expect out of this manga but it definitely surpassed my expectations。 The message about the homeless and the gays being not "dirty" was great and I definitely loved it and teared up。The artstyle and humor was great but there were some events that didn't make sense and felt out of place。Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the digital copy for an honest review。 I honestly didn't know what to expect out of this manga but it definitely surpassed my expectations。 The message about the homeless and the gays being not "dirty" was great and I definitely loved it and teared up。The artstyle and humor was great but there were some events that didn't make sense and felt out of place。Thank you Netgalley for providing me with the digital copy for an honest review。 。。。more
